The men and women of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department have joined forces with the Police Athletic League (PAL) to create the inaugural 5K run for peacekeepers’ kids.
The event is a fund-raiser, with 100% of the proceeds going to the children of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
The event will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 8:00 a.m. The race will start and finish at the Police Memorial Park located at 3250 Metro Academy Way, with a barbeque to follow.
The cost of registration is $40.00 which includes a commemorative T-shirt. The same T-shirts will be sold on race day for $20.00.
Registration forms and information can be found at www.active.com, and the PAL website, http://www.snpal.com/.
Southern Nevada has had an unprecedented number of line-of-duty deaths in the past 12 months. The Department hopes for a good turnout in support of the children of those who gave all.

Step Out for Safety
This is a news release from LVMPD:
Sheriff Gillespie to Speak at “Step Out for Safety” Walk/Run for Seatbelt Awareness
Last year Metro lost two police officers who were in vehicle accidents while not wearing seatbelts. Sheriff Gillespie is determined to make sure that doesn’t happen again, and that all drivers understand the importance of buckling up.
As part of its seatbelt awareness campaign, Metro is partnering in the 3rd Annual “Step Out for Safety” walk/run on Saturday March 27, 2010 at UMC’s Trauma parking lot. The walk is not a fundraiser, but rather an awareness event. Activities will include a one mile fun walk, a three mile run, and a separate children’s course with McGruff the crime dog. There will be safety information and resources, free prize drawings, and a DJ. Participation in the event is FREE!
Registration is at 9:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 10:00 a.m. The public is invited to come out, have a nice walk or run, and support this important awareness campaign.
The 3rd Annual Step Out for Safety event is sponsored by the Adam Thomas Health & Safety Foundation, UMC Trauma Center, LVMPD, Safe Community Partnership, Think First Nevada, Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, and the Governor’s Advisory Board on Traumatic Brain Injury. The emcee will be Tom Hawley from Channel 3.
The goal of this collective group is to decrease fatalities from unbelted drivers, and reduce the cost of rehabilitation and long-term care of unbelted car crash victims.
“People need to buckle up every time they get in a car,” says Gillespie. “Sporadic seatbelt use just isn’t good enough. The one time you don’t wear it may be the time it would have saved your life.”
